(Protect your hive before the scammers swarm)
Running a small business takes passion, hard work, and trust. Unfortunately, scammers know that too - and they often target small business owners who are juggling a million things at once. Whether it's fake invoices, phishing emails, or sneaky "domain renewal" notices, these scams can cost you valuable time and money if you're not careful.
Here's a quick guide to the most common scams hitting small businesses right now, how to spot them, and how to keep your hive safe.

Fake Invoices & Unordered Merchandise
One of the oldest tricks in the book: a scammer sends an invoice for products or services you never ordered. The amount is usually small enough to slip through unnoticed - and once paid, they'll keep sending more.
How to spot it:
You don't recognize the company or vendor.
The invoice looks generic or missing details.
It says "past due" even though you've never seen it before.
Tip: Always double-check invoices against your records or contact your supplier directly before paying anything.
Phishing & Imposter Emails or Calls
Scammers are getting smarter with impersonation. They'll pose as your bank, tech support, or even a client - urging you to click a link, share sensitive info, or make a quick payment.
How to spot it:
Urgent or threatening tone ("Act now or lose access!")
Email addresses that look slightly off (like @gmaill.com). In case you missed it, there are two "L's" in that gmail.
Requests for passwords, account numbers, or money.
Tip: Never click suspicious links or share private details unless you verify the source through a phone number or email you trust.
Fake Domain Renewals & Directory Listings
These scams look or sound very official - an email, letter or phone call warns that your website domain, online listing, or Google business page is about to expire. It usually urges you to pay immediately to keep your business "active."
How to spot it:
Claims your domain will "expire today."
Requests urgent payment to a third-party service.
Poor grammar or no contact details.
Tip: Check your actual domain registrar (like GoDaddy, Squarespace, or Google Domains) or your Google Business Profile listing before responding. Don't pay through any unfamiliar links or over the phone during the call.
Tech Support or Payment Scams
You might get a call or pop-up claiming your business system has an issue - but it's really a scammer trying to get access to your computer or financial info.
How to spot it:
Unsolicited calls offering to "fix" something.
Requests to download remote software.
Demands for immediate payment or gift cards.
Tip: Only work with verified IT or payment support you already use. No legitimate company will pressure you to act fast or pay with unusual methods.
